How Rick Santorum Is Making His "Google Problem" Worse

Search Engine Land spacer
Using search optimization techniques to bury negative articles in search results has become a required public relations and marketing skill. The techniques of utilizing SEO to bury a negative article or website deep in search results is the subject of How Rick Santorum Is Making His "Google Problem" Worse. Following the Iowa caucuses, the term "Rick Santorum" rose to become one of the most searched on Google. But, one of the top three results points to a now infamous web site called spreadingsantorum.com that defines the word "santorum" as the byproduct of, well, anal sex. That's his "Google Problem", planted by opponents to Santorum's positions on gay marriage. Better SEO can move that article off the first page of results. For another take on the same subject, see Dear Rick Santorum: 6 Ways to Fix Your Google Problem in Mashable. Actual SEO experience: A businessman wanted to bury a negative article appearing on the site of the SEC. Overcoming the high ranking of an often-linked SEC article is a major undertaking. The businessman paid a SEO service $45,000 to accomplish the task — which they did by placing other more positive articles and building links to those articles, resulting in the article moving down to Page 2 on Google listings. Then, separate from the SEO project, the businessman made a multi-million contribution to a major university. The articles about the donation buried the negative SEC article down around 125 in the Google list of results. A multimillion dollar donation is an expensive but highly effective approach to SEO.

Social Networks' Predictive Powers Will Be Highlighted in 2012 Election Cycle

Marketing Vox spacer
Too often, social media measurement and analysis focuses on The Numbers, but The Numbers are not really the point. The point of social media monitoring and measurement is to figure out "what is this telling us about our business and how we can improve it". Research has already demonstrated that aggregated comments in social media can correctly predict the box-office success of movies. Social media postings are also likely to predict election results and product acceptance. Social Networks' Predictive Powers Will Be Highlighted in 2012 Election Cycle looks at how monitoring and analysis of social media can provide one of the holy grails of marketing research — a telescope into the future.

Why Web Monitoring is Better Than Social Media Monitoring

Spiral 16 spacer
Social media monitoring is important, but why limit monitoring to social media. That's the proposition of Why Web Monitoring is Better Than Social Media Monitoring. Although it's promotional, the article makes a valid point. Other parts of the web — news especially — are just as influential as social media, and probably more so. Bottom line: it's just as important to monitor news and other Web content. Agreed! Check out CyberAlert 5.0 News Monitoring.
