Media Monitoring News October 2011: Issue 2
Best PR Articles + PR Job Openings & Meetings

In this week's Media Monitoring News, the Best PR Articles section announces CyberAlert's PR Grants for Not-for-Profits for 2012. The articles include our tribute to the redoubtable Steve Jobs in Lessons from Steve Jobs. A key theme this week is "Social Media Measurement" with articles that include "twists" on the normal approaches. If you've ever had problems getting approval for a PR or marketing project from the legal department, take a look at 7 Tips for Getting Legal Approval on Social Media Programs.

PR Grants for Not-for-Profits
CyberAlert

CyberAlert, Inc., the worldwide media monitoring service, will award a minimum of 15 public relations grants to not-for-profit organizations for 2012. Each PR grant award consists of one full year of free news monitoring / press clipping services or social media monitoring service, ranging in value from $3,000 to $4,500.
From 2004 to 2011, CyberAlert awarded 163 media monitoring grants to not-for-profit organizations, including 19 grants in 2011, with an aggregate value of over $375,000. Among the grant recipients for 2011 BrainTrust Canada, Children's Brain Foundation, Interaction, National Research Center for Women and Families, Peace OUTside Campus, Society for Public Health Education, Surgical Eye Expeditions, and United Nations University.
In past years, the PR grants were restricted to organizations in the United States and Canada. This year all not-for-profit organizations worldwide are eligible to apply for a grant, except for previous grant recipients.
CyberAlert is accepting grant applications until December 31 and will announce the grant recipients in January. More information and a simple and secure grant application is available online at https://secure.cyberalert.com/grantsX.html.
Lessons from Steve Jobs
Wall Street Journal

The plethora of articles upon the death of Steve Jobs mostly talked about what he accomplished at Apple. We were more interested in looking at what he taught us — and went looking to assemble quotations from him. Well, lo and behold, the Wall Street Journal beat us to it in Steve Jobs's Best Quotes, an assemblage of quotes published by the Journal at the time of his resignation as CEO of Apple. His genius and deep insight shine through. Also in the Journal, news editor David Hall penned Lessons from Jobs, analyzing the key characteristics of his genius. The Journal also published a text of Jobs's commencement address Find What You Love, delivered at Stanford University in 2005.
Finally, an absolutely wonderful image of Jobs by nineteen-year-old Jonathan Mak, a student at Hong Kong's Polytechnic University School of Design, who came up with the idea of incorporating Steve Jobs' silhouette into the bite of the Apple logo, symbolising both Jobs' departure and lingering presence at the core of the company. The image was originally published by the Telegraph in the U.K. together with many other images.

7 Tips for Getting Legal Approval on Social Media Programs
Edelman Digital
