Google + — Most Everything You Need to Know

Social Media Today spacer
Google+, announced last week, is Google's attempt to unseat Facebook and Linked-In. Initial reviews and uptake are quite positive. In an article entitled PR and Communications Implications of Google+ (and Other Observations), Shel Holtz offers a comprehensive, well-organized and insightful analysis of the features, advantages, and potential business applications of Google+. Amid the hundreds of articles on G+, it may be the only one PR and marketing folks need to read. If you want to know more, check out 39 Things You Should Know about Google+. But, there's no rush to crank up your G+ presence. According to the Los Angeles Times, G+ is designed for individual users and Google asks businesses to stay out of Google+ — for now. Should you comply? Google says businesses and brands will be summarily kicked out if they don't. As everyone knows from SEO experiences, it's not good idea to get on the bad side of Google.

Would You Flunk a Social Media Background Check?

Gizmodo spacer
Gizmodo ran social media background checks on six of its employees. The author flunked — and challenges you to determine Would You Flunk a Social Media Background Check?. First, check your own name. Have you ever exhibited aggressive or violent acts or assertions, unlawful activity, discriminatory activity (for example, making racist statements), and sexually explicit activity on social media? Then, check your business name and brand names. Is there a trail of evidence that you make a prospect think twice about doing business with you? Just run the names through multiple search engines including social media search engines — and look deep into the results.

Pay particular attention to the notion of "flashbulb memory" early in the presentation.

How to Create a Useful Logo

DamnIWish.comn spacer

Never Underestimate the Power of Traditional Methods [Media]

Destination CRM spacer
With all the hype about and energy being put into social media, some companies are downplaying traditional media. Pepsi tried it and learned that social media alone cannot carry a major brand. Never Underestimate the Power of Traditional Methods — equate "methods" with "media" — poses a series of "would you rather" questions to underscore the continued importance of mainstream media. Question #1: Would you rather be quoted in Mashable or The New York Times? Bottom line: Traditional media still carry more weight and have greater reach than social media; social media cannot replace traditional media in most marketing and PR campaigns.
